So you’ve landed the interview!
Prepare to shine by following the helpful tips below
1
Envision
Your Fit
Review the job description and other information to identify key skills, attributes, and outcomes the team is looking for. Keep these on a list so you can highlight how you fit them during the interview
2
Sharpen
Your Knowledge
Conduct research to learn about the company’s key values, what they look for in candidates, and how the company is differentiated from industry competitors
3
Understand the Path
Conduct research to learn about the company’s key values, what they look for in candidates, and how the company is differentiated from industry competitors
4
Know Your Interviewer
Review your interviewer’s LinkedIn and other online resources to find areas that you have in common, which you can use to build rapport
5
Learn from Contacts
Connect with 2-3 people in your network that work/worked at the company to get insight on what the interview process will look like and where to spend your time preparing
6
Develop Your Stories
Build out 3-5 stories from your prior work experience that you can adapt and use to answer expected questions (Tell me about a time, Biggest strength/weakness, Leadership experience… etc.)
7
Practice Early
Rehearse mock interview questions with someone experienced in interviewing at least a week in advance of the interview, utilize your resources or a career services company to get practice sessions in before the big day
8
Demonstrate Your Interest
Prepare 3-5 questions for the interviewer. Focus on areas you are genuinely curious about and will provide insight into what working there would be like. Do not ask questions that are easily found online
9
Prepare for the Day
Understand the logistics of the interview, don’t be afraid to ask the interview coordinator for details or helpful tips, and make sure you are ready the day before
- If the interview is remote, setup and test your tech and make sure it is ready to go the night before the interview
- If the interview is over the phone, consider doing the interview while standing and near a mirror so you can see yourself. Smiling comes through over the phone!
- If the interview is in person, plan out your transportation and be sure to get there 20 minutes early to reduce stress on yourself. Don’t forget to bring a pen, paper/notebook, and a copy of your resume
10
Rest Up
Get sleep the night before, let your preparation do the work
